Sony changes “controversial” God of War: Ascension trophy

Sony Santa Monica has issued a statement to Joystiq explaining why it changed its “controversial” trophy, Bros Before Hoes, from God of War: Ascension to Bros Before Foes.

This entire “controversy” began when two sensitive journalists by the name of Adam Sesslar and Arthur Gies were positively outraged as this achievement popped on-screen after  Kratos beat the crap out of a “woman”. Only the “woman” at hand was a Fury who was hell bent on killing him and messing with his sanity. Plus, the trophy has been taken completely out of context as it pops up not after you beat her to a pulp, but after you get rescued by a certain someone (we’ll leave it at that since it borders on spoiler territory).

Pummelling her to death was fine, but as soon as the trophy popped up, these fine gentlemen felt a wave of revulsion sweeping over them. That revulsion, however, was not felt while stabbing, mutilating, burning, decapitating or eviscerating a multitude of men, women, beasts and mythological creatures in previous God of War games. Cyclopses have feelings too, you know.

Anyway, developer Sony Santa Monica  got a whiff of this “controversy”, and changed the name of the trophy so that they don’t offend their patrons, who by the way, are the very same people who don’t have a problem playing an 18+ rated game called God of War. Here’s what they had to say.

“We have created and will soon push out a patch for God of War: Ascension that alters the title of one of the game Trophies. The text was offensive to some members of our community and impacted their enjoyment of the game. We are endlessly committed to ensuring that our community can fully enjoy the experiences the team has created. As such, we’ve addressed the feedback and amended the Trophy in question.”

As always, share your thoughts in the comments below, but be gentle; we gamers are a sensitive bunch. Apparently.
