Gears of War 2 launch event coverage

Despite all of the past run-ins between the Xbox 360 community and former Xbox 360 Country Manager Mohit Anand, he did manage to pull off a sweet launch party for Halo 3 last year, which in a way set the bar for future game launches in India. We were hoping that the Gears of War 2 launch held in Mumbai on November 3 would at least match that, if not better it.

The turnout at Blue Frog in Lower Parel was fairly low, mostly due to the fact that up until two days before the event, neither Microsoft nor their PR representatives knew if the event was press-only or open to all. The announcement that it was the latter came a little too late, resulting in the low turnout. But we weren’t complaining.

The people that were present at the event were a mix of Microsoft officials, mediapersons and IVG members. We pretty much had the consoles to ourselves, but unfortunately it was restricted to just two controllers per console. There were 10 Xbox 360 consoles, each running a retail copy of Gears of War 2, while other consoles in the seating area contained everything from PGR4 to Xbox LIVE Arcade games.

The event was scheduled for 7 pm, but it was only by 8 – 8:30 pm that those in attendance got a taste of the game after a brief introduction from Ashim Mathur, Marketing Manager for Microsoft’s E&D Division. The food was great, the drinks flowed freely and all in all it was a relaxed evening where everyone got a juicy first look at one of the most eagerly anticipated games of the year days before its worldwide launch. But one can’t help but think that had the event been better publicised, it may well have given the Halo 3 party a run for its money.
