Borderlands creator Gearbox Software and publisher 2K Games have released a new trailer for their new first-person multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game, Battleborn.
The game, which was first announced last July, will have 25 playable characters, and like other MOBAs, each character will have their own unique powers and weapons as well as different roles in the game.
Battleborn will feature a single-player or a five-player co-op story mode (split-screen or online) and three competitive multiplayer modes.
The multiplayer mode supports up to 10 players online in 5v5 matches, like so many MOBAs out there, but setting it apart will be three distinct modes – Incursion, Devastation, and Meltdown.
- Incursion: Teams of heroes defend their base from waves of AI-controlled minions while working together, alongside their own minions, to destroy their opponents’ base
- Devastation: Teams of heroes face off in a fast-paced death match and must capture and hold objectives on the map to win
- Meltdown: Teams of heroes protect their minions as they march to their death at the centre of the map. Points are scored for minions who throw themselves into the incinerator, and the team with the most points wins
Battleborn will make use of the Helix System for character growth, which allows players to level up a character from 1 to 10 in a single story mission or competitive multiplayer match.
The will also have a command rank, where players can rank-up their own player profile, unlocking badges and titles to impress friends, and loot that can be used to benefit any hero the player chooses to command.
The game will also feature a persistent progression system in which all experience points, whether earned through playing Battleborn’s story mode or competitive modes, contribute to levelling up individual character rank, as well as the player’s profile command rank.
Most of the features do seem well placed in a number of MOBAs today, but the story mode along with three different online modes does differentiate it from the extremely competitive MOBA world.
Battleborn will release on PC, PS4 and Xbox One during “this winter”. More details, including a firm release date will be revealed at E3 2015.
