I'm pretty sure they are not restricted in that sense.They are probably free to choose a software an artist feels more skilled with, whether it be Max or Maya or even Blender.

nope,but i intend to become one.

I assumed most studios use 3DS Max

Actually i have a preference for Blender and Maya,but then i heard that most studios use max,so switched to that.
