Developer Q&A: Medal of Honor

A while back, we sent EA a few questions we’d been wanting to ask the Danger Close team at EA Los Angeles about their upcoming franchise reboot of Medal of Honor. The game’s executive producer Greg Goodrich was nice enough to answer the questions for us, shedding some light on various topics, ranging from multiplayer beta feedback and single-player campaign details to the differences between the console and PC versions and whether or not the game will ship with a co-op mode.

Being a franchise reboot, how drastically different from the past games will this Medal of Honor game be?

For this game, we’ve gone back to our roots and the core tenets that the franchise was founded on. We’ve focused on the soldier and telling their story with authenticity and respect.

With so much emphasis on multiplayer these days, single player campaigns in games – shooters in particular – tend to get ignored and we end up with 5-6 hour campaigns. With DICE handling the multiplayer aspect of MOH, can we expect a beefier single player experience than we’ve grown used to?

Absolutely. This is one of the reasons we made the decision to utilise the core strengths of two separate studios. It is a crowded genre and our competitors are very good at what they do. So for this reboot, we wanted to do everything we could to give the Medal of Honor fans a great experience on both sides of the coin.

What were the challenges and advantages of using Afghanistan as a setting for the game in terms of level design and mission structure?

The setting allowed us a great deal of diversity. Afghanistan has a visual cascade of differing environments. From lush green river valleys and dry, arid desert terrains to squalid inner city slums and snowy mountain peaks.

Will the player control a single character throughout the campaign, or will we keep switching between characters in different squads?

There are four playable characters in the new Medal of Honor, each from their own unique unit. That being said, they are all focused on a common goal and a single narrative thread.

Will the UI in the PC version be the same as it was in the beta and similar to the console versions, or will there be a PC-specific UI design in the final game?

The UI will definitely get an overhaul and improve a whole lot since the beta. There are a lot of PC-specific UI features that are not in the console version, such as the essential server browser, and lots of other options.

Can you tell us about any specific changes that are being made to the multiplayer component based on the feedback you’ve received from the beta?

We have got a lot of great feedback from the beta and lots of changes are going into the game. Mostly, we are tweaking and balancing the weapons, such as more recoil, harder to get support actions, etc. We’re also adding a few things, such as weapons pickups. And, of course, other fixes and optimisations such as performance, significantly improved hit detection, and more.

Can you tell us about the multiplayer game modes and weapon/equipment options that the game will ship with?

We will ship with more game modes than we have shown so far and more weapons as well. But I can’t go into the details what they will be yet.

Will there be campaign co-op or any other co-op mode at launch?

No, there will not be any co-op mode at launch.
