PS4 Media Player brings DLNA, new formats

One of the PS4’s most requested features was comprehensive media capabilities, and Sony has taken a big step towards fulfilling that request with the PS4 Media Player, which is available now on the PlayStation Store and as an icon the PS4’s main menu.

The Media Player works over your home network via DLNA and through USB drive support. Here are the supported video formats and codecs:

  • MP4 (Visual: H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile Level4.2; Audio: AAC LC, AC-3 Dolby Digital)
  • MPEG-2 TSL (Visual: H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile Level4.2, MPEG2 Visual; Audio: MPEG2 Audio Layer 2, AAC LC, AC-3 Dolby Digital; AVCHD: (.m2ts, .mts))

The media player will also support JPEG (based on DCF 2.0/Exif 2.21), BMP and PNG photos, and MP3 and AAC (M4A) music.

Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls coming to PS4

Quantic Dream’s PS3-exclusive games Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls are coming to PS4 for PAL territories, which includes India.

Both games will be available digitally, and physically as a two-game bundle, but the announcement on the PlayStation Blog didn’t mention if the two games were being remastered.

In September, Sony is launching the limited edition 20th Anniversary Dualshock 4 controller.

Wireless Stereo Headset 2.0 launching in white

Also in September, Sony is launching the Wireless Stereo Headset 2.0 for PS4 in white.

The 7.1 virtual surround sound with hidden microphone is already available in black, but Sony will launch the white variant in Europe on 16th September.

The headset never did make it to India, but we’ve asked Sony India whether it plans to launch it in the future.
