Sony is preparing to launch two new hardware revisions of the PlayStation 4, the most notable change in one of them being increased storage space.
US certification body, the FCC, has published documents outing two new PS4 hardware models – CUH-1215A and CUH-1215B. Note that these are US model numbers; PS4 models sold in India follow different naming conventions).
Both these models will be more power-efficient than what’s currently in the market, featuring 230W/2.3-0.95A power supplies rather than the current 250W/2.5-1.15A.
The CUH-1215B model, however, also features a 1 TB hard drive, which is new for the PS4. While some Xbox One models have sported 1 TB hard drives, this will be the first time a higher capacity hard drive will feature in the PS4.
With game install sizes growing and an increased reliance on digital distribution, the increased storage space will be welcome.
Note that there’s no design change in these PS4 models, so don’t expect these new models to look any different than what’s in stores now.
E3 is just around the corner, so Sony could well reveal the 1 TB PS4 at its PlayStation press conference on 15th June.
From the looks of it, the 500 GB model will continue alongside the new 1 TB model, but it remains to be seen if the 1 TB version is priced higher or if the 500 GB version will drop in price.
The PS4 with the 500 GB model is available in India at an MRP of Rs 39,990, although you can pick up the console by itself or with Bloodborne or The Order: 1886 for less at retailers like Amazon.in.
