Update: Square Enix has issued the following statement in response to reports on its closure in India:
“We have made a long-term commitment to serving the Indian market, and it means there always will be a possibility that we make necessary changes in the strategy from time to time in order to take the best strategic option. It is true that we are considerably reducing the size of our Mumbai office, however, it does not mean we will withdraw from India.”
Original story:
Square Enix has shut down its India operations just a year after setting up shop, laying of its six employees in the process.
While Square Enix India didn’t develop games itself, it was working with Indian developers to create mobile games specifically for the India market.
The Indian subsidiary didn’t release a single game during its brief existence, and while it was working with several developers around India, none of those projects got the go-ahead of Square Enix’s Japan headquarters.
Note that the closure of Square Enix India will have no impact on the release of the publisher’s console and PC games in India, which are distributed by E-xpress Interactive via Square Enix Europe.
Square Enix hasn’t released an official statement as to what prompted the decision to wind up its India operations, but we’ll update this story if and when we learn more.
